Born on the Cherokee Strip in Perry, Oklahoma, Dave grew up with Western Swing. As a child, Dave regularly sat on the bandstand while his father, Ashley Alexander, performed with Western Swing greats such as Bob Wills, Johnny Lee Wills and Leon McAuliffe. A fourth generation musician, at four Dave began his musical career as a trumpet player in a fifth grade band class instructed by his father. He later received his degree in music at the University of North Texas.
During college Dave joined the Red River Brass, a band created by Neiman Marcus to promote the Red River western clothing line. Inspired by Western Swing selections played by the group, Dave decided to assemble his own Western Swing Big Band.
In 1984, Dave was invited to perform at the White House for President Ronald Reagan's Inauguration. Since then he has entertained such dignitaries as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Prince Charles, Nancy Reagan, and President Bush. Other notable performances include The World Economic Summit, The Bolo Ball at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, the MS Rodeo Ball with Trisha Yearwood, and numerous occasions the National Anthem for the World Champion Dallas Cowboys.
Since 1991, Dave has had the distinct honor of performing regularly at the Houston Rodeo, the world's largest Livestock Show and Rodeo. He is also the composer of the Houston Rodeo Theme Song.
Along with his group, "The Legends of Western Swing", Dave has appeared with the biggest names in country music such as Garth Brooks, George Strait, Clint Black, Reba McEntire and Leon Rausch. He is currently headlining concerts and dances across the United States and Canada. During his off season his hobbies include antique cars, horses, and the State of Colorado.
