Before anyone called him an Outlaw, Willie Nelson tried to play the game in Nashville. These 8 CD's include his 1964 sessions for Monument Records, and his complete recordings for RCA between 1964 and 1972. The eight years at RCA were riddled with ups and downs, but they helped shape the Willie Nelson we came to know. Togther, Willie and producer Chet Atkins tried everything from the full Nashville Sound to intimate sessions with two guitars and a bass. There was a groundbreaking live album at Fort Worth's Panther Hall, an LP with backing from Ernest Tubb's Texas Troubadours, and other sessions.
There were hits, "The Party's Over", "One In A Row", remakes of his earlier hits as a songwriter such as "Night Life", "I Gotta Get Drunk", "Funny How Time Slips Away","Hello Walls", and "Healing Hands Of Time", plus two daring concept albums: 'Texas In My Soul' and 'Yesterday's Wine', both now viewed as landmark albums. Several of the songs from those albums, such as "Me And Paul", would later become Willie Nelson standards. At his final sessions, he tried another concept, defined by the title song, "Phases And Stages". He didn't finish the idea at RCA, but those sessions are included complete here for the first time.
The seeds of the future were planted at RCA, and this collection provides the definitive look at Willie Nelson's evelutionary -- if bumpy -- road. Perhaps no phase of his long career is more in need of reevaluation than the RCA years, and now the RCA recordings are gathered together in one place for the first time, with the added bonus of the Monument sessions.
